The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced funding support aimed at improving livestock systems and strengthening surveillance to prevent and control avian influenza outbreaks. The initiative seeks to protect poultry health while safeguarding the livelihoods of farmers dependent on the sector.
FAO officials highlighted that bird flu continues to pose a serious threat to both animal and human health. Strengthening disease monitoring and rapid response mechanisms is essential to limit the spread of infections and reduce economic losses in the poultry industry.
The support will focus on modernizing livestock infrastructure, implementing biosecurity measures, and providing training to farmers and veterinary staff on early detection and management of avian influenza. These interventions are expected to enhance resilience against outbreaks and improve overall livestock productivity.
Experts note that integrated surveillance systems, combined with improved farm management practices, are crucial for controlling highly pathogenic avian influenza. FAO’s assistance is intended to create a coordinated approach involving governments, local authorities, and farmers to mitigate risks and ensure food safety.
By supporting livestock development and disease prevention, FAO aims to protect both animal welfare and public health. The program underscores the importance of proactive measures in managing zoonotic diseases and maintaining stable agricultural economies dependent on healthy poultry populations
