Hyderabad-Based Aquaculture Startup Launches India’s Major Trout RAS Farm

SmartGreen Aquaculture, a Hyderabad-based startup, has inaugurated one of India’s largest recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) farms for trout, marking a significant step in the country’s aquaculture expansion. The facility is designed to optimize fish production using advanced water recirculation technology, which minimizes water usage while ensuring high-quality fish output suitable for both domestic consumption and export markets.

The startup aims to address growing demand for high-value freshwater fish in India and abroad. Trout, traditionally limited to hilly regions, can now be farmed inland using RAS technology, allowing year-round production under controlled environmental conditions. SmartGreen Aquaculture plans to use the facility to expand into salmon production in the near future, tapping into premium seafood markets.

RAS technology not only reduces the environmental footprint of aquaculture but also enables precise control over water quality, temperature, and feeding regimes, resulting in faster growth and improved fish health. The Hyderabad facility is expected to serve as a model for sustainable, high-efficiency aquaculture in India.

The startup’s expansion reflects a broader trend in Indian aquaculture toward technology-driven farming systems capable of meeting export standards and boosting rural employment. Industry experts note that such innovations can help India emerge as a significant player in the global trout and salmon markets while promoting sustainable fish farming practices.

SmartGreen Aquaculture’s new farm is already generating interest among investors and seafood buyers, highlighting the potential for inland aquaculture to diversify India’s seafood portfolio and strengthen its position in international markets.
