Ranchi: Jharkhand’s innovative use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology in its Agri Stack initiative for climate-smart agriculture has received commendation in India’s Economic Survey 2026. The survey highlights the state’s approach as a forward-looking model that leverages technology to help farmers manage climate-related risks, optimise resource use, and enhance overall agricultural productivity.
The Agri Stack scheme integrates GIS mapping, advanced data analytics, and real-time monitoring to provide actionable insights to farmers. This allows precise identification of suitable crops, efficient water management, and timely interventions against adverse climatic events. By linking weather patterns, soil health data, and market intelligence, the initiative empowers farmers to make informed decisions that can mitigate risks and increase yields.
According to the Economic Survey, Jharkhand’s approach demonstrates how technology-driven, climate-resilient farming can be scaled to other regions facing similar challenges. The report notes that GIS-based solutions not only improve productivity but also support sustainability by promoting efficient use of inputs such as water, fertilizers, and pesticides.
“The integration of GIS and data analytics into agriculture is a game-changer for small and marginal farmers,” the survey observes. “Jharkhand’s Agri Stack provides a replicable framework for enhancing farm-level decision-making while addressing climate vulnerabilities.”
The state government has actively promoted the scheme by training farmers in digital tools, enabling them to access GIS-driven advisories through mobile applications and local agricultural extension services. Such initiatives are expected to improve crop planning, reduce losses due to erratic weather, and enhance profitability for farmers across the state.
Experts believe that Jharkhand’s model exemplifies the potential of merging technology with traditional agricultural practices. By providing accurate, localized insights, the Agri Stack initiative can foster climate-smart agriculture that is both productive and sustainable, serving as a blueprint for other states seeking to strengthen resilience in the agricultural sector.
With growing concerns over climate change and its impact on farming communities, Jharkhand’s GIS-enabled Agri Stack stands out as a pioneering step toward sustainable, data-driven, and future-ready agriculture in India.
