Indian Agricultural Research Institute Secures Historic Spot in QS World Rankings, Boosting India’s Global Academic Standing

The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), popularly known as the Pusa Institute, has achieved a landmark milestone by entering the QS World University Rankings 2026 under the category of Agriculture & Forestry for the first time in its history. The recognition marks a major leap in India’s global academic visibility in agricultural sciences and reinforces the country’s growing influence in research, innovation, and sustainable farm development.

IARI’s inclusion in the internationally benchmarked QS rankings is being hailed as a significant achievement for India’s agricultural education ecosystem. The evaluation process, conducted annually by global agency Quacquarelli Symonds, assesses institutions on academic reputation, research output, international collaborations, and faculty impact. Securing a position among leading global institutions reflects IARI’s sustained commitment to scientific excellence and its expanding footprint in advanced agricultural research.

Founded in 1905, IARI has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s agricultural narrative—from spearheading the Green Revolution with the development of high-yielding wheat varieties to advancing climate-resilient farming technologies, biotechnology, and genomics. Over the decades, its scientists have contributed extensively to crop improvement, mechanization, natural resource management, and precision farming, making the institute a cornerstone of India’s food security framework.

Officials noted that the QS recognition comes during a period of increasing focus on global food systems, sustainability, and climate adaptation. With agriculture facing challenges ranging from erratic weather patterns to soil degradation and rising input costs, institutions like IARI are central to developing solutions that combine productivity with resilience and environmental responsibility.

IARI Director and senior scientists welcomed the announcement, stating that the ranking validates the institute’s strategic research investments, international partnerships, and training excellence. They highlighted ongoing collaborations with universities and research centers across Asia, Europe, and North America, which have strengthened IARI’s orientation toward globally relevant problem-solving.

The institute’s modern research infrastructure—spanning genomics laboratories, climate-controlled phenotyping facilities, digital agriculture platforms, and state-of-the-art experimental farms—played a key role in its improved evaluation. Additionally, IARI’s efforts to expand student exchange programs, joint research projects, and academic mobility contributed to a stronger global academic perception.

Experts believe the ranking will create new opportunities for India’s agricultural research sector. Higher global visibility is expected to enhance foreign collaborations, attract international students, and open pathways for joint funding in frontier areas such as AI-driven farming, biofortification, carbon-neutral agriculture, and sustainable intensification.

The achievement also aligns with India’s broader push to elevate its agricultural institutions to global standards. Government initiatives supporting innovation, agri-startups, digital farming, and internationalization of research have helped institutions like IARI compete on a global stage.

Stakeholders from the agricultural community, including policymakers, scientists, and industry leaders, expressed optimism that IARI’s recognition will inspire other agricultural universities in India to strengthen research quality, diversify global partnerships, and enhance their academic offerings.

As global food security challenges intensify, IARI’s entry into the QS World University Rankings not only celebrates its scientific legacy but also reinforces its role as a leading institution shaping the future of agriculture—both in India and across the world.
