The MoU was formalised during a high-level Indian delegation to China led by Shri Ashwini Shrivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Department of Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. The delegation included senior ISMA leaders and experts from across the country’s sugar sector, such as Niraj Shirgaokar, Vice President, ISMA; Deepak Ballani, Director General, ISMA; Aditya Jhunjhunwala, MD, K.M. Sugar Mills Ltd.; Roshan Lal Tamak, CEO, DCM Shriram Ltd.; M. Silvester Goldwin, Director, Kothari Sugars and Chemicals Ltd.; Vedang Pittie, Executive, Harinagar Sugar Mills Ltd.; Deep Malik, Director (Sugar & Ethanol), ISMA; Dr. Sushil Solomon, Advisor, ISMA; and Dr. Govindaraj Perumal, Director, ICAR–Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore.
This collaboration marks a major step toward strengthening bilateral research, varietal development, modern breeding practices, and advanced technology exchange between India and China. By leveraging joint R&D programmes, capacity-building initiatives, scientist exchanges, and cutting-edge tools such as molecular breeding, genomic selection, and stress-tolerance screening, the partnership aims to significantly enhance sugarcane productivity, resilience, and sustainability in India.
Experts believe the MoU will accelerate India’s journey toward developing high-yielding, climate-resilient, and disease-tolerant sugarcane varieties—critical for improving farm profitability and boosting the competitiveness of the Indian sugar industry.
The agreement represents a forward-looking step in creating a more innovative, productive, and future-ready sugarcane ecosystem, aligned with India’s long-term agricultural and bio-energy goals.
