Rivulis Boosts Climate Resilience in French Kiwi Orchards with Precision Irrigation Solutions

Precision irrigation technology is playing a pivotal role in protecting kiwi orchards from climate-related risks, as demonstrated by Rivulis in southwestern France. At Les Vergers du Ticol, a rapidly expanding orchard enterprise led by Laurent Capayrou, advanced irrigation systems are helping secure fruit quality and stabilize yields amid increasing environmental challenges.

Located in France’s Tarn region, the farm has expanded from 28 to 110 hectares in recent years, with kiwis emerging as a strategic crop. Currently cultivated on 6 hectares, with an additional 3 hectares recently replanted, kiwi production is central to the orchard’s long-term development plan. However, the region faces mounting risks from spring frost, hailstorms, and extreme summer heat—factors that can significantly reduce output and compromise fruit quality.

To mitigate these threats, the orchard installed Rivulis’ Rondo canopy irrigation system beneath protective netting. The system delivers uniform water distribution across each row, a critical factor in effective frost protection. Unlike conventional sprinklers that rely on large droplets and slower coverage, Rondo ensures rapid and consistent application, enhancing anti-frost performance while also operating safely under hail nets.

Beyond frost defense, the system serves a dual purpose during summer. By lowering orchard and canopy temperatures during heatwaves, it reduces plant stress and water loss, supporting healthier fruit development throughout the growing season.

For day-to-day irrigation and fertigation management, the farm utilizes the AquaSmart 2002 microjet system. This self-regulating technology allows highly precise water application, guided by hygrometric sensors installed across the orchard. According to Capayrou, irrigation is adjusted “down to the millimeter,” ensuring optimal moisture levels while preventing overuse of water and fertilizers.

Given that irrigation water is sourced from the Tarn River—naturally rich in particles and algae the farm also integrated Rivulis F2400 sand filters (8×48 inches). These filtration systems prevent clogging, protect microjets, and ensure reliable operation during critical anti-frost phases.

Technical collaboration between the orchard team and Rivulis specialists further optimized the setup. Key parameters such as sprinkler spacing, per-hectare flow rates, and equipment selection were carefully calibrated to match orchard conditions.

With a focus on uniform yield, premium fruit quality, and sustainable resource management, Les Vergers du Ticol illustrates how precision irrigation technologies can enhance orchard resilience. By combining innovation with tailored agronomic support, Rivulis is helping growers safeguard productivity against increasingly volatile climate conditions.
