In a proactive move to promote sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture, the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Mandi, organized a Farmer Exposure Visit Programme under the leadership of Project Director Rakesh Patial. The initiative aimed to encourage natural farming among farmers practicing Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati (BPKP) in the Seri Kothi and Maloh gram panchayats of Sundernagar block.
Approximately 70 farmers participated in the programme, which took them to demonstration plots in Bilaspur district on Saturday. These model farms showcased successful natural farming practices adopted by local cultivators, offering hands-on learning opportunities and real-world examples of chemical-free, low-cost agricultural techniques.
Farmers Witness Natural Farming First-Hand
During the visit, participating farmers were exposed to various aspects of natural farming such as mulching, organic composting, natural pest repellents, and techniques to enhance soil fertility without synthetic inputs. The interaction with Bilaspur farmers provided practical insights into crop management, water conservation methods, and the long-term benefits of natural farming.
Agriculture Department officials emphasized the multiple advantages of natural farming, including:
- Cultivation of chemical-free, healthy crops
- Enhanced soil fertility and biodiversity
- Reduction in input costs
- Eco-friendly, climate-resilient practices
- Sustainable pest and disease control
- Increased farm profitability and self-reliance
Interactive Knowledge Sharing Session
A special interactive session was also organized, where farmers from both Bilaspur and Sundernagar exchanged experiences, discussed challenges, and shared success stories related to natural farming. The session encouraged mutual learning and created a platform for future collaboration among farmers across districts.
Expert Guidance and Support
The event was supported by key officials including Deputy Project Director Hitender Thakur, Sanjay Kumar, and Block Technology Manager Lekhraj, who provided expert guidance throughout the visit. They addressed farmers’ queries and offered technical advice on transitioning from conventional to natural farming systems.
A Step Toward Sustainable Agriculture in Himachal
The exposure visit is part of a broader strategy by the Himachal Pradesh government to promote natural and sustainable agriculture practices, thereby empowering farmers to become environmentally responsible and economically self-sufficient. Encouraged by the visit, many participating farmers expressed a keen interest in adopting these methods on their own farms.
The programme marks a meaningful step forward in building awareness and capacity for natural farming in the region, aligning with the state’s vision for a greener, healthier, and more resilient agricultural future.
