PMFBY Benefits Over 34 Lakh Farmers Across India

The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has provided crucial financial assistance to more than 34 lakh farmers across India, helping them recover from crop losses caused by natural calamities, pests, and diseases.

According to official data, the flagship crop insurance scheme has disbursed thousands of crores in claim settlements, ensuring timely compensation and protecting farmers from severe income shocks. The scheme covers a wide range of crops, including cereals, pulses, oilseeds, and horticultural produce, across both Kharif and Rabi seasons.

Agriculture Ministry officials stated that PMFBY has played a vital role in safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods and encouraging them to continue farming despite challenging weather conditions. “Our goal is to provide every farmer with a safety net against unforeseen losses, enabling them to invest confidently in agriculture,” an official said.

Introduced in 2016, PMFBY aims to provide affordable crop insurance with a minimal premium burden on farmers, while the government bears the bulk of the subsidy. The scheme also promotes the use of remote sensing technology and mobile-based claim reporting to speed up the settlement process.

Farmers’ organizations have welcomed the continued implementation of PMFBY, noting that it has helped many small and marginal farmers avoid debt traps and maintain financial stability.
