Neendakara Harbour in Kerala Wins Agricultural Innovation Award

integrating sustainable practices and modern technology into coastal and marine-based livelihoods.

Traditionally known as a major center for fisheries, Neendakara has recently adopted innovative initiatives linking agriculture, aquaculture, and coastal resource management. The award highlights the harbour’s role in promoting blue economy practices, which balance livelihood generation with environmental conservation.

Officials said the recognition came for projects that include the use of digital platforms for fish marketing, cold-chain infrastructure to reduce post-harvest losses, and training programs for fisherfolk and coastal farmers. These initiatives have not only improved incomes but also enhanced food security in the region.

“This honour acknowledges the efforts of the Neendakara community in creating a model where traditional practices meet innovation,” said a state agriculture department spokesperson. “By integrating modern tools with age-old fishing knowledge, the harbour has shown how sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.”

Experts noted that the award also reflects Kerala’s broader push toward climate-resilient coastal agriculture, where farming and fishing communities adopt technology to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

The recognition of Neendakara Harbour is expected to inspire similar projects across India’s coastal states, showcasing how innovation at the grassroots level can transform both agriculture and allied sectors.
