The Indian government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a self-reliant and value-driven agricultural sector, emphasizing the importance of resilience, innovation, and increased value addition in farming. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted agriculture’s pivotal role in national development and economic growth, underlining the government’s vision for a modern and sustainable farming ecosystem.
Addressing stakeholders from across the agricultural value chain, Minister Chouhan stressed that India’s farming sector must move beyond mere production to focus on value creation, technology adoption, and efficient supply chains. “Agriculture is not just the backbone of our rural economy; it is a key driver of India’s growth. Our goal is to make farmers self-reliant while promoting high-value crops, processing, and market linkages,” he said.
The minister outlined several ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening farmer incomes, improving post-harvest management, and promoting agri-entrepreneurship. Central to this approach is encouraging farmers to embrace modern technologies, digital platforms, and sustainable practices that enhance productivity while minimizing environmental impact.
He also highlighted the government’s focus on resilience in agriculture, including measures to mitigate climate risks, reduce dependency on imports, and expand domestic processing capabilities. By fostering value addition and innovation, the ministry aims to create a robust and competitive agricultural sector capable of meeting both domestic and international demand.
Experts note that this vision aligns with India’s broader economic strategy of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), positioning agriculture as a cornerstone of national growth while ensuring farmers benefit directly from higher income opportunities.
Minister Chouhan called upon policymakers, industry players, and farmers to work collaboratively, saying, “Together, we can transform Indian agriculture into a self-reliant, technology-driven, and value-focused sector, contributing to national prosperity and global competitiveness.”
