Vietnam Ships First Batch of ASF Vaccine to Indonesia, Marking Major Step in Global Expansion

Vietnam has taken a significant stride in its animal health industry by exporting its first commercial batch of the African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccine to Indonesia. The shipment, consisting of nearly 120,000 doses of the “Avac ASF Live” vaccine, represents a landmark achievement for Vietnam as it works to position itself as a global supplier of advanced livestock vaccines.

African Swine Fever, a highly contagious viral disease that affects pigs, has caused severe disruptions in the global pork industry over the last decade. Countries across Asia, including Indonesia, have struggled with repeated outbreaks that led to major losses for farmers and shortages in pork supply. Until recently, no vaccine had been widely commercialized, making Vietnam’s progress particularly significant for the region’s livestock sector.

The “Avac ASF Live” vaccine, developed by Vietnamese researchers and approved for domestic use last year, has undergone extensive field trials to ensure safety and efficacy. The vaccine has shown strong potential in reducing mortality and controlling the spread of the ASF virus in pig populations. Its export marks the beginning of Vietnam’s broader plan to supply the vaccine to countries dealing with persistent ASF challenges.

For Indonesia, the arrival of the vaccine is expected to support ongoing efforts to rebuild and stabilize its pig farming industry. The country has faced repeated ASF outbreaks, especially in regions like North Sumatra, where the disease severely impacted small and medium-scale pig producers. The newly imported doses will be distributed through authorized veterinary channels to ensure proper handling and administration.

Vietnam’s successful export also highlights the country’s growing capabilities in veterinary biotechnology. Over the past few years, Vietnam has heavily invested in research and development to reduce reliance on imported vaccines and establish itself as a leader in livestock disease management. The international acceptance of its ASF vaccine signals growing confidence in Vietnam’s scientific standards and regulatory systems.

Officials from Vietnam’s agriculture ministry have expressed optimism that this milestone will open doors to additional export opportunities. Several countries in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe have shown interest in the vaccine as they look for effective tools to manage ASF outbreaks. Talks are reportedly underway to expand supply to other markets once regulatory approvals are secured.

Overall, the export of the first batch of “Avac ASF Live” to Indonesia marks a major breakthrough for Vietnam’s livestock vaccine industry and offers renewed hope for pig farmers across the region battling the long-standing threat of African Swine Fever.
