China-Developed Fungicide Launched to Strengthen Control of Wheat Scab and Stalk Rot

A new China-original fungicide designed to address major wheat diseases has been officially launched, marking a significant advancement in domestic crop protection innovation. Jiangsu Pesticide Research Institute Co., Ltd. recently held its 2026 Strategic Product Launch Conference in Nanjing, where several new products were introduced to the market, drawing strong interest from industry experts and distributors.

Among the newly released solutions, Mailifu, a formulation combining phenamacril and prothioconazole, emerged as the flagship product of the event. Alongside Mailifu, the company also launched Daliya mixture products (phenamacril + difenoconazole + imidacloprid) and Guquan (tebuconazole + azoxystrobin), forming a comprehensive portfolio aimed at disease management in major crops.

Mailifu attracted particular attention due to its strong performance in controlling wheat scab and stalk rot—two diseases that pose persistent challenges in wheat-growing regions, especially in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and parts of the Huanghuai region. In these areas, effective disease control must go beyond yield protection to also reduce mycotoxin contamination and improve grain quality.

According to the company, Mailifu demonstrates clear advantages over conventional fungicides. Its strong systemic activity, long-lasting protection, and favorable environmental profile allow it to effectively suppress disease development while reducing toxin accumulation in wheat grain. This dual benefit supports both food safety and quality improvement.

The success of Mailifu is closely linked to phenamacril, a novel fungicide independently developed by Jiangsu Pesticide Research Institute. Phenamacril features a unique mode of action as a myosin-5 inhibitor, disrupting the cytoskeleton and motor protein systems of Fusarium pathogens. This mechanism inhibits mycelial growth and germ tube elongation, resulting in weaker pathogen development and improved disease control.

By integrating phenamacril with prothioconazole, the institute has created a formulation that combines innovative chemistry with proven fungicidal performance. The product is formulated as a 30% suspension concentrate and is positioned as a targeted solution for wheat scab management.

Looking ahead, Jiangsu Pesticide Research Institute is continuing research on expanded applications of phenamacril. Ongoing studies are exploring its use in controlling wheat and corn stalk rot, wheat and peanut root rot, and rice ear rot. The launch of Mailifu highlights China’s growing capacity for original pesticide innovation and its commitment to addressing key challenges in sustainable crop production.
