Hundreds of farmers took to the streets of Paris, driving tractors in a large-scale demonstration against the proposed EU–Mercosur free-trade agreement. The protesters expressed concern that the deal could expose European agriculture to heightened competition from South American imports, particularly in sectors like beef, poultry, and soy.
Farmers argued that the agreement might undermine domestic production standards, pricing, and livelihoods, calling for stronger protections for European agricultural products. The demonstration highlighted widespread anxiety within the farming community about potential market imbalances and the impact on small and medium-sized farms.
European Union and Mercosur negotiators have emphasized that the pact includes measures to safeguard sustainability and quality standards. However, the protests underscore the challenges in balancing free-trade ambitions with domestic agricultural interests, as stakeholders continue to debate the agreement’s broader economic and social implications.
