Water scarcity has long been a major challenge for farmers in Rajasthan. To address this, the state government launched the Kisan Farm Pond Scheme, which has emerged as a big relief for farmers who struggle to irrigate their crops during dry spells.
Under this scheme, farmers receive substantial subsidies to build farm ponds on their fields to collect and store rainwater. This helps improve irrigation facilities and raises groundwater levels, making farming more sustainable in drought-prone areas.
Last Date to Apply
Farmers in Rajasthan must apply for the scheme by 30 September to receive the benefits this season. The government aims to continue providing subsidies through the Agriculture Department till 2025–26.
How Much Subsidy is Provided?
Farmers can get up to ₹1.35 lakh in subsidies for constructing farm ponds. The government covers 70% of the total cost, while the farmer contributes the remaining 30%.
Eligible farmers can build either an unlined (earthen) pond or a plastic lined pond for better water storage.
Who Can Apply?
- The applicant must own at least 0.3 hectares of land in their name or share equivalent land as a joint account holder.
- If two farmers jointly apply for separate ponds in the same field, both ponds must be at least 50 feet apart.
- Additional subsidies may be available for installing sprinkler or drip irrigation systems along with the pond.
How Much Can You Get?
For Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Small and Marginal Farmers:
- Earthen Pond: Subsidy up to ₹73,500
- Plastic-lined Pond: Subsidy up to ₹1.35 lakh
For Other Farmers:
- Earthen Pond: Subsidy up to ₹63,000
- Plastic-lined Pond: Subsidy up to ₹1.2 lakh
Key Benefits of the Scheme
✅ Irrigation Security: Stores rainwater for irrigation, reducing dependency on erratic rainfall.
✅ Groundwater Recharge: Helps improve the local water table in rain-fed areas.
✅ Sustainable Farming: Promotes efficient use of natural resources for better crop output.
Who Gets More Benefit?
Farmers belonging to SC/ST categories, or those who are classified as small or marginal farmers, get higher subsidies compared to other farmers.
Important Conditions
- Minimum pond size must be 400 cubic meters; the maximum size eligible for subsidy is 1,200 cubic meters.
- Ponds must be constructed as per guidelines to qualify.
- The subsidy is given only after the pond is built and additional irrigation systems (like sprinklers or drip plants) are installed if required.
