Union Minister J.P. Nadda Assures Uninterrupted Fertilizer Supply to Telangana Amid Rising Demand

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Jagat Prakash Nadda, held a crucial meeting on Tuesday with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and his delegation to discuss the availability of fertilizers in the state, especially during the peak demand period of the ongoing Kharif season.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Reddy highlighted the urgent need for uninterrupted urea supply in July and August to meet the needs of farmers. He stressed that the state is currently witnessing heightened agricultural activity and any shortage of fertilizers could disrupt crop production.

In response, Union Minister Nadda assured full support from the central government. “The Centre is committed to meeting the genuine requirements of Telangana’s farmers. Necessary steps will be taken to ensure adequate and timely supply of fertilizers,” he said. He directed officials from the Department of Fertilizers to coordinate closely with the state to streamline distribution.

However, Minister Nadda also raised concerns over the sharp rise in urea consumption in Telangana. He noted that during the Rabi 2024–25 season, urea sales in the state saw a 21% increase compared to the previous year. Similarly, during the current Kharif season, urea usage has already risen by 12.4% compared to the same period last year. “Such excessive use of urea can have long-term negative effects on soil health,” he cautioned.

The meeting also featured a detailed briefing by Fertilizer Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra on the Prime Minister’s PRANAM (PM Programme for Restoration, Awareness, Nourishment and Amelioration of Mother Earth) scheme. The initiative aims to promote balanced fertilizer use, reduce dependence on chemical inputs, and encourage organic and natural farming practices.

Mishra urged Telangana officials to take strict action against the diversion of urea for non-agricultural purposes and ensure equitable distribution of fertilizers across all districts. “Uniform availability and responsible usage are key to sustainable farming,” he said.

Among those present at the meeting were Members of Parliament Mallu Ravi and Ch. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Telangana’s Special Representative to the Centre A.P. Jithender Reddy, and senior officials from both the Department of Fertilizers and the Telangana Agriculture Department.

The discussion reflects growing national concerns over fertilizer management, soil health, and the need for coordinated action between central and state governments to ensure sustainable agricultural practices in India.
