Australia is stepping up efforts to boost agricultural productivity, aiming to secure its position as a leading food producer and exporter while ensuring sustainability in the face of global challenges.
The government, in collaboration with industry bodies and research institutions, is rolling out initiatives to improve farm efficiency, technological adoption, and climate resilience. These include increased investment in agri-research, expansion of precision farming techniques, and support for sustainable water and soil management.
Agriculture Minister Murray Watt highlighted that the sector is central to Australia’s economy, generating billions in export revenue and sustaining thousands of rural jobs. “By lifting productivity, we can enhance our global competitiveness, strengthen rural communities, and contribute to global food security,” he said.
Key focus areas include developing high-yield crop varieties, improving livestock genetics, and accelerating adoption of automation and AI-driven tools to reduce costs and increase output. The plan also emphasizes environmental stewardship, aiming to achieve growth without compromising natural resources.
Industry groups have welcomed the move, noting that higher productivity will not only benefit farmers but also help Australia meet the rising demand for quality food in international markets, particularly across Asia and the Pacific.
