
In a significant step toward inspiring rural youth and fostering future agricultural professionals, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) on Monday organized an exposure visit for students from Government Higher Secondary School, Chatlora, Rafiabad, Baramulla under the ‘HADP-20: Innovative Extension Approaches’ initiative.
The visit, attended by 100 students, was aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of modern agricultural technologies, career avenues in agriculture and allied sectors, and awareness about key government schemes such as the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and the J&K Competitiveness Improvement Project (JKCIP).
The day-long program began at SKUAST-K’s Shalimar Campus, where students were welcomed into the Biotechnology Laboratories. Here, they observed cutting-edge research and technological advancements in plant biotechnology and crop improvement. Interacting with senior scientists, the students gained valuable insights into how modern science is transforming traditional farming methods and enhancing productivity.
The tour also included visits to various fruit orchards, where students experienced firsthand the application of modern horticultural practices. This practical exposure helped them understand the importance of scientific approaches in increasing efficiency and sustainability in orchard management.
Later, the students visited the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (FVSc) at SKUAST-K’s Shuhama campus. At the Skill Hub and Simulation Lab, they observed advanced veterinary training methods. The visit continued to the university’s sheep farms, where model livestock farming and scientific animal management practices were demonstrated.
At the veterinary clinics, students were introduced to the intricacies of animal healthcare, witnessing procedures and engaging with scientists to explore career options in veterinary medicine and animal sciences.
Throughout the day, experts emphasized the broad scope of opportunities available in agriculture and allied sectors, extending beyond traditional farming. They explained how schemes like HADP are reshaping the agricultural landscape of Jammu & Kashmir, promoting innovation, technology adoption, climate resilience, and entrepreneurship.
The J&K Competitiveness Improvement Project (JKCIP) was also presented as a key enabler for developing a more competitive and future-ready agricultural sector, with targeted support for young agri-entrepreneurs.
The initiative reflects SKUAST-K’s continued commitment to engaging rural communities, nurturing young talent, and building a bridge between scientific research and grassroots education. By exposing students to the real-world application of agricultural science and introducing them to support systems and career pathways, SKUAST-K is playing a crucial role in shaping the next generation of agricultural innovators and professionals.
