The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Africa Food Systems Forum held in Dakar, Senegal, highlighting five decades of research and impact in global and African agriculture. The milestone event brought together policymakers, scientists, and development experts to discuss strategies for sustainable food systems and food security.
During the forum, IFPRI showcased its contributions to agricultural research, policy development, and poverty reduction in Africa and beyond. Over the past five decades, the institute has played a critical role in promoting evidence-based policies, improving crop productivity, enhancing nutrition, and supporting rural livelihoods.
IFPRI’s Director General, speaking at the event, emphasized the importance of innovation, data-driven decision-making, and collaboration between governments, research institutions, and the private sector. “As we mark 50 years, our focus remains on ensuring that food systems are equitable, resilient, and sustainable for all,” he said.
The forum also highlighted IFPRI’s recent initiatives in climate-smart agriculture, digital farming technologies, and value chain development, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate change and food insecurity. Participants noted that strengthening African food systems is essential not only for regional stability but also for global food security.
Experts at the event called for enhanced investment in agricultural research, capacity building for farmers, and policies that support smallholder productivity while addressing environmental sustainability. IFPRI’s milestone serves as a reminder of the vital role research institutions play in shaping the future of agriculture and nutrition.
The 50th-anniversary celebration in Dakar provided a platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and renewed commitments to building resilient and inclusive food systems across Africa.
