India Accelerates Smart and Sustainable Farming Through Digital Agriculture Initiatives

India is strengthening its push toward smart and sustainable farming by expanding the use of digital agriculture tools designed to support millions of smallholder farmers. As part of this broader transformation, global crop sciences company Syngenta is scaling up its digital platform, ‘Cropwise Grower’, to enhance on-field decision-making and improve farm productivity across the country.

The Cropwise Grower platform integrates artificial intelligence–based tools that assist farmers with critical aspects of crop management. These include crop planning, early pest and disease detection, weather-linked advisories, and access to real-time market price information. By combining data analytics with practical field-level insights, the platform aims to help farmers make timely and informed decisions that reduce risks and optimise input use.

A key focus of the initiative is accessibility for small and marginal farmers. The platform is being adapted for use in multiple Indian languages, ensuring that digital advisory services are understandable and relevant at the grassroots level. This localisation is expected to improve adoption rates and enable farmers to benefit from technology without requiring advanced technical knowledge.

The expansion of such digital tools aligns with India’s national objectives of improving farm incomes, enhancing sustainability, and building resilience against climate variability. Precision advisories and data-driven practices can help reduce excessive use of water, fertilisers, and pesticides, while supporting environmentally responsible farming.

Industry experts note that partnerships between technology providers, agribusiness firms, and the farming community will be crucial for the long-term success of digital agriculture in India. Initiatives like Cropwise Grower highlight how innovation, when tailored to local needs, can play a meaningful role in empowering smallholder farmers and strengthening the country’s agricultural ecosystem.
