India Achieves Regenerative Agriculture Milestone with Soil Carbon Credit Approval

In a significant development for sustainable agriculture, Grow Indigo, a leading agri-innovation company, has received approval for its regenerative agriculture soil-carbon project under a major voluntary carbon standard, Verra. The certification marks a key milestone in India’s efforts to link sustainable farming practices with climate action and carbon markets.

The approval enables the generation of high-integrity soil carbon credits, creating potential new income streams for smallholder farmers across the country. By adopting regenerative practices—such as minimal tillage, cover cropping, organic amendments, and crop rotations—farmers can enhance soil carbon sequestration, improve soil health, and increase resilience against climate variability.

Commenting on the achievement, Grow Indigo emphasized that the project demonstrates how climate-smart agriculture can be both environmentally impactful and economically rewarding. Soil carbon credits offer a measurable way for farmers to participate in climate solutions while earning additional revenue for sustainable land management practices.

Experts note that soil carbon initiatives represent a transformative opportunity for India’s agricultural sector. With millions of smallholder farmers, widespread adoption of regenerative techniques could contribute significantly to national climate goals while supporting food security and rural livelihoods.

This recognition under the Verra standard also strengthens confidence among investors and buyers in the carbon market, ensuring that credits are credible, verifiable, and aligned with global sustainability benchmarks.

The milestone highlights the growing role of regenerative agriculture in India, demonstrating that environmentally responsible farming can simultaneously support farmer income, ecosystem health, and climate mitigation objectives.
