India and Kenya Hold First Joint Working Group Meeting to Strengthen Agricultural Cooperation

India and Kenya have taken a significant step toward deepening bilateral cooperation in agriculture by convening the first Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting through a virtual platform. The meeting is being viewed as a milestone in institutionalizing collaboration across agriculture and allied sectors between the two countries.

The session was co-chaired by Shri Ajit Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Mr. Stephen Ronoh, representative of Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. Officials from both sides exchanged detailed perspectives on their respective agricultural priorities, sectoral challenges, and emerging policy initiatives.

Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in agricultural research, improving market access, promoting farm mechanization, and enhancing capacity-building and training programs. Both countries agreed that structured technical exchange and institutional partnerships could significantly contribute to raising farm productivity and improving farmers’ incomes.

Particular emphasis was laid on cooperation between research institutions, advanced seed technologies, irrigation management systems, natural resource management practices, and agricultural extension services. The two sides also deliberated on facilitating smoother export-import mechanisms for agricultural commodities to enhance bilateral trade flows.

Senior officials from multiple divisions of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare participated in the meeting, including representatives from the Crops Division, Mechanization & Technology (M&T) Division, Natural Resource Management (NRM) Division, Plant Protection (PP) Division, and Extension Division. Officials from the Indian High Commission in Kenya and the Ministry of External Affairs were also present.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy of expanding agricultural diplomacy with African nations. Strengthening partnerships with Kenya—a key East African economy—holds potential for mutual learning in climate-resilient agriculture, smallholder-focused mechanization, and sustainable farming systems.

Experts note that the JWG framework will facilitate structured knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and long-term collaboration. By fostering coordinated efforts in research, innovation, and trade facilitation, the partnership is expected to generate tangible benefits for farmers and contribute to sustainable agricultural growth in both countries.
