International Year of the Woman Farmer Kicks Off to Recognize Women’s Role in Global Agriculture

The International Year of the Woman Farmer has officially been launched as a global initiative aimed at highlighting the indispensable contributions of women in agriculture and food systems. The campaign seeks to strengthen women’s roles in innovation, sustainability, and leadership across the agricultural value chain.

The initiative brings renewed global attention to the millions of women farmers who play a central role in food production, rural livelihoods, nutrition security, and environmental stewardship. Across developing and developed nations alike, women are deeply involved in crop cultivation, livestock management, fisheries, agri-processing, and local food markets. Yet, despite their significant contributions, they often face structural barriers including limited access to land ownership, credit, modern technology, training, and decision-making platforms.

Organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization and other international development partners have long emphasized that empowering women farmers can significantly increase agricultural productivity and reduce hunger. Studies indicate that closing the gender gap in agriculture could raise farm output and improve household food security in many regions.

The International Year campaign will focus on promoting policy reforms, expanding access to climate-smart technologies, strengthening financial inclusion, and enhancing leadership opportunities for women in rural communities. Special emphasis will be placed on encouraging women’s participation in digital agriculture, sustainable farming practices, and agribusiness entrepreneurship.

Global events, knowledge-sharing platforms, and capacity-building programs are expected to be organized throughout the year. Governments, research institutions, farmer organizations, and civil society groups are being encouraged to collaborate in recognizing women farmers as key drivers of agricultural transformation.

As climate change, resource scarcity, and global food demand continue to challenge food systems worldwide, the International Year of the Woman Farmer serves as a powerful call to action. By investing in women’s empowerment, the global community aims to build more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agricultural systems for the future.
