Agriculture remains a central and sensitive component of the ongoing India–US trade negotiations, with both sides continuing discussions on market access, tariff structures, and regulatory issues. Officials familiar with the talks indicate that dialogue is progressing, even as India maintains a firm position on safeguarding its domestic farm and dairy sectors.
The negotiations form part of a broader effort by New Delhi and Washington to address long-standing trade frictions and expand bilateral commerce. Agriculture has traditionally been one of the most complex areas in India–US trade relations, given the sector’s economic, social, and political importance in India, where farming supports a large share of livelihoods.
According to government sources, India has clearly communicated its red lines during the discussions. While it remains open to improving trade facilitation and resolving technical barriers, the country has reiterated that core interests related to food security, small farmers’ incomes, and the viability of the dairy sector cannot be compromised. American stakeholders have often raised concerns about high import duties, sanitary and phytosanitary standards, and certification requirements that they argue restrict exports to the Indian market. Indian officials, however, have consistently maintained that these measures are aligned with domestic priorities and international norms.
Experts note that the current talks are focused less on sweeping concessions and more on incremental progress. This includes exploring ways to improve transparency, streamline procedures, and enhance predictability for traders on both sides. There is also discussion around aligning standards and addressing specific product-level issues through technical consultations rather than broad tariff reductions.
The continuation of agriculture talks signals a mutual recognition of the sector’s importance within the larger trade relationship. While a quick breakthrough appears unlikely, sustained engagement is viewed as a positive step toward narrowing differences over time. For India, the challenge lies in balancing its ambition to deepen economic ties with the US while ensuring that domestic agricultural and dairy interests remain fully protected.
