The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to transparent and timely financial support for farmers through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, with Aadhaar-based payments delivering a 99.92% success rate in the latest 19th instalment. This achievement reflects the effectiveness of integrating technology into public welfare schemes.
Launched in February 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the PM-KISAN scheme provides ₹6,000 annually to farmers with cultivable landholding, disbursed in three equal instalments through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. To date, the government has transferred over ₹3.90 lakh crore directly into farmers’ Aadhaar-linked bank accounts across 20 instalments.
Aadhaar and Land Seeding Ensures Seamless Payments
To ensure that every eligible farmer receives their entitlement without delay or error, the government has mandated Aadhaar-based payments from the 13th instalment onward (December 2022–March 2023). In addition, land record seeding, e-KYC verification, and integration with platforms such as UIDAI, PFMS, and the Income Tax Department have been implemented to improve accuracy and prevent fraudulent claims.
This robust digital ecosystem ensures that payments are made to verified beneficiaries only, while eliminating common issues like data mismatches, account changes, or errors due to bank mergers.
In instances where transaction failures occur—often due to issues like Aadhaar de-seeding, account closure, or non-mapping of Aadhaar with bank accounts—the system automatically flags these discrepancies. Notifications are sent to the concerned farmers and state/UT authorities for correction. Once the data is rectified, the funds are released promptly in the next payment cycle.
Accessible and Responsive Grievance Redressal
To further support farmers, the Government has established multiple grievance redressal mechanisms, including:
- CPGRAMS portal
- PM-KISAN portal
- Email and physical submission systems
A significant innovation in this area is the introduction of the AI-based Kisan eMitra Chatbot, launched in September 2023. This multilingual chatbot provides 24/7 support to farmers in 11 Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, and others. As of July 15, 2025, the eMitra Chatbot has successfully handled over 95 lakh queries from 53 lakh farmers, offering immediate, clear, and accurate assistance across mobile and web platforms.
Empowering Farmers Through Technology
The seamless integration of digital tools into the PM-KISAN scheme underscores the government’s strategy of using technology to empower India’s agricultural community. Aadhaar seeding, data verification, and user-friendly support systems have not only enhanced transparency but also ensured timely delivery of financial benefits to millions of farmers.
