In a significant move to support mango farmers in Karnataka facing declining market prices, Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a relief initiative to compensate for the price drop. The Central and State governments will jointly share the burden of the price difference, offering crucial financial support to affected farmers.
The decision was taken during a video conference held on June 21, 2025, between Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Karnataka’s Agriculture Minister Shri N. Chaluvaraya Swamy. Union Agriculture Secretary Shri Devesh Chaturvedi was also present during the meeting.
As per the agreement, both governments will compensate mango growers for the price difference on 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes, with a focus on the Totapuri variety, which has seen a sharp decline in market value. Karnataka had earlier submitted a proposal to the Centre, highlighting the distress caused by falling prices of tomatoes and mangoes. However, with tomato prices having now stabilized, the immediate focus has shifted solely to mangoes.
The assistance will be provided under a central government scheme, with the cost to be shared equally by both governments. Karnataka’s estimated total mango production this season stands at around 10 lakh metric tonnes, and this compensation will cover nearly one-fourth of that quantity.
Minister Chaluvaraya Swamy expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for responding swiftly to the needs of the state’s mango farmers. The move is expected to provide timely financial relief and stabilize the incomes of thousands of cultivators in Karnataka who have been reeling under the pressure of falling prices.
This collaborative effort reflects the Centre’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods and ensuring agricultural sustainability across the country.
