
In a major boost for technology-driven agriculture, the Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) in Pune has announced a significant increase in its subsidy for sugarcane farmers adopting artificial intelligence (AI) in cultivation. The subsidy has been doubled to ₹18,250 per hectare for the first 5,000 farmers, offering substantial support to encourage modern farming practices.
The initiative aims to promote the use of AI and digital technologies in sugarcane farming, enabling farmers to optimize irrigation, fertilizer usage, and crop management. By adopting AI-based solutions, farmers can achieve higher yields, reduce costs, and improve sustainability in cultivation.
Importantly, the subsidy is available to all farmers, irrespective of whether they are affiliated with cooperative or private sugar mills. This inclusive approach ensures that both small and large-scale farmers can benefit from advanced technologies, fostering innovation across the sugarcane sector.
Officials at VSI emphasized that the move reflects a broader commitment to modernizing agriculture and supporting farmers in embracing cutting-edge tools. “Artificial intelligence can transform sugarcane cultivation by providing precise insights on soil health, irrigation schedules, and pest management. This subsidy is a step toward making technology accessible to farmers on the ground,” they said.
The doubled subsidy is expected to encourage rapid adoption of AI in sugarcane fields, particularly in Maharashtra, which is one of India’s leading sugarcane-producing states. With better crop monitoring and predictive analytics, farmers are likely to achieve improved productivity, reduced wastage, and enhanced profitability.
