Rice Farmers in India to Benefit from ‘PaddyMitra’ Digital Advisory Initiative

Rice farmers in India are set to gain improved access to digital agricultural advisory services through the expansion of the “PaddyMitra” chatbot initiative. The program, jointly implemented by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Reliance Foundation, is being expanded in the eastern Indian state of Odisha to support farmers with real-time information and crop management guidance.

The PaddyMitra platform is designed to deliver timely and practical advice to rice growers through a chatbot-based digital interface. Farmers can access recommendations related to crop management, pest and disease control, fertilizer application, and weather-based advisories directly through their mobile phones. The initiative aims to strengthen digital extension services and ensure that smallholder farmers receive reliable and location-specific agricultural information.

Rice remains one of the most important staple crops in India, supporting millions of farmers and contributing significantly to national food security. However, farmers often face challenges such as unpredictable weather patterns, pest outbreaks, and limited access to agricultural advisory services. The PaddyMitra chatbot addresses these challenges by providing instant responses and expert-backed recommendations that help farmers make informed decisions during different stages of crop cultivation.

According to project experts, the chatbot integrates agronomic knowledge with weather data and field-based insights to generate customized advisories. This enables farmers to respond quickly to emerging crop issues, reduce production risks, and improve overall farm productivity. The system also supports sustainable farming practices by promoting efficient input use and timely crop management interventions.

The expansion of the program in Odisha is expected to reach a larger number of rice-growing communities, particularly in rural areas where access to conventional extension services is often limited. By leveraging digital technologies, the initiative aims to bridge the information gap between agricultural scientists and farmers, making expert advice more accessible and affordable.

Officials involved in the program highlighted that digital tools like PaddyMitra can play an important role in modernizing agricultural extension systems. With increasing smartphone penetration and improved rural connectivity, such platforms are becoming valuable tools for delivering knowledge directly to farmers’ hands.

Beyond improving productivity, the initiative is also expected to enhance farmers’ resilience to climate-related challenges. By receiving early alerts on weather conditions and pest outbreaks, farmers can take preventive measures and reduce potential crop losses.

The expansion of the PaddyMitra chatbot marks another step toward strengthening digital agriculture in India. Experts believe that initiatives combining scientific expertise, technology, and partnerships between research institutions and development organizations can significantly improve the effectiveness of agricultural advisory services and support sustainable rice production in the country.
