
A new report by the FAIRR Initiative has raised concerns over what it describes as a growing “credibility gap” in the way many of the world’s largest food companies are implementing their regenerative agriculture commitments. While major agribusinesses and food manufacturers have increasingly pledged to support sustainable farming practices, the report suggests that progress on the ground is often slower than promised, with limited transparency and inconsistent reporting on measurable outcomes.
Regenerative agriculture has gained global attention as a farming approach designed to improve soil health, increase biodiversity, enhance water retention, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Many leading food companies have announced ambitious targets to source ingredients from farms using regenerative practices, seeing the approach as an important tool for addressing climate change while strengthening long-term food security.
However, the FAIRR report indicates that despite these public commitments, many companies have yet to establish clear implementation strategies or provide sufficient evidence that their goals are being achieved. According to the report, businesses frequently announce large-scale regenerative agriculture programs but often fail to disclose detailed timelines, farmer participation rates, funding commitments, or measurable environmental outcomes.
One of the report’s primary concerns is the lack of standardized definitions for regenerative agriculture. Because there is no universally accepted framework, companies often use different criteria to define regenerative practices. This makes it difficult for investors, policymakers, consumers, and farmers to compare progress across companies or verify sustainability claims.
The report also highlights that many corporate commitments focus on the number of hectares enrolled in regenerative farming programs rather than the actual environmental benefits achieved. Experts argue that measuring improvements in soil carbon, biodiversity, water quality, and farm resilience provides a more accurate picture of success than simply reporting land coverage.
For farmers, the transition to regenerative agriculture can involve significant challenges. Adopting practices such as reduced tillage, cover cropping, crop rotation, integrated livestock management, and lower chemical inputs often requires new knowledge, financial investment, and several years before measurable benefits become visible. Without long-term financial support and technical assistance from food companies, many farmers may struggle to make the transition successfully.
Investors are also paying closer attention to the credibility of corporate sustainability commitments. FAIRR notes that transparent reporting, science-based targets, and independent verification are becoming increasingly important as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations influence investment decisions. Companies that fail to demonstrate genuine progress may face reputational risks and growing scrutiny from shareholders.
The report recommends that food companies strengthen accountability by setting clear milestones, adopting standardized reporting frameworks, disclosing measurable environmental indicators, and collaborating closely with farmers and scientific institutions. Greater transparency, it says, will help build trust among consumers, investors, and regulators while ensuring that regenerative agriculture delivers real environmental and economic benefits.
As climate change, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss continue to threaten global food systems, regenerative agriculture remains a promising solution. However, the FAIRR report concludes that ambitious announcements alone are not enough. To maintain credibility, companies must back their commitments with measurable action, transparent reporting, and meaningful support for farmers, ensuring that regenerative agriculture becomes more than just a sustainability pledge and delivers lasting improvements for agriculture, the environment, and global food security.
