Climate Change Challenges Coffee Production as Robusta’s Resilience Comes Under Scrutiny

A new study is challenging the widely held assumption that Robusta coffee is inherently more resilient to climate change than other coffee varieties. The findings could have important implications for coffee-producing countries as farmers and plantation managers look for ways to adapt production systems to rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and increasingly unpredictable weather conditions.

Coffee is one of the world’s most important agricultural commodities, supporting millions of farmers and workers across tropical and subtropical regions. The crop is particularly sensitive to environmental conditions, meaning climate change could significantly influence where and how coffee can be grown in the future.

Robusta’s Climate Advantage Questioned

Robusta coffee has traditionally been considered better suited to warmer conditions than Arabica. Because of this reputation, some producers have viewed Robusta as a potential alternative as temperatures increase and climatic conditions become less favorable for Arabica production.

However, the new research suggests that Robusta should not automatically be considered climate-proof. Its ability to withstand higher temperatures and changing environmental conditions may depend on factors such as water availability, local climate, soil conditions and the intensity and duration of heat stress.

This challenges a relatively simple approach to climate adaptation in which farmers might replace vulnerable coffee varieties with Robusta without making broader changes to plantation management.

Rising Temperatures Create Multiple Risks

Climate change can affect coffee production through several interconnected factors. Higher temperatures can influence flowering, fruit development and bean quality, while irregular rainfall can disrupt flowering cycles and reduce yields.

Extended periods of drought can place additional stress on coffee plants, particularly in regions without reliable irrigation. On the other hand, excessive rainfall can contribute to soil erosion, waterlogging and conditions favorable to pests and diseases.

These risks mean that climate resilience cannot necessarily be achieved through variety selection alone.

Implications for Coffee Farmers

For farmers, the findings underline the importance of developing multiple adaptation strategies. These could include improved shade management, better soil and water conservation, irrigation where feasible, diversified production systems and the use of coffee varieties suited to specific local conditions.

Shade trees can help moderate temperatures within coffee plantations and reduce heat stress. Maintaining healthy soils can also improve the ability of plants to cope with periods of limited rainfall.

Farmers may increasingly need to combine improved planting material with changes in farm management rather than relying on a single coffee variety as a solution to climate risks.

Importance for Coffee-Producing Countries

The findings could have wider implications for major coffee-producing countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Governments and agricultural research institutions may need to reassess long-term strategies for adapting coffee production to climate change.

Investment in climate research, breeding programs and farmer extension services could become increasingly important. Understanding how different coffee varieties respond to specific combinations of temperature, rainfall and soil conditions can help producers make better planting decisions.

Global Coffee Supply at Risk

Climate-related production challenges could eventually affect global coffee supplies and prices. If major producing regions experience repeated yield losses, international markets could face tighter supplies and increased price volatility.

The impact would extend throughout the coffee supply chain, affecting processors, exporters, roasters and consumers.

Outlook

The new findings suggest that Robusta alone may not provide a complete solution to climate-related challenges facing the coffee industry. As temperatures rise and rainfall patterns become less predictable, coffee producers will need more comprehensive adaptation strategies.

For the industry, the priority will be to identify combinations of varieties, farming practices and technologies that can maintain productivity while improving resilience. The future of coffee production may therefore depend not simply on choosing a supposedly climate-resilient variety, but on developing climate-smart and locally adapted production systems.
