In a bid to modernize and digitize crop insurance processes, the Government of India has introduced CROPIC (Collection of Real Time Observations and Photographs of Crops), a mobile-based application under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). This digital innovation is set to revolutionize how crop health and damage are assessed across the country.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Ramnath Thakur, shared this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
What is CROPIC?
CROPIC is a technology-driven mobile application designed to collect geotagged, time-series photographs of standing crops directly from the field. These photographs are captured by farmers and field coordinators using smartphones, creating a real-time, ground-level data bank of crop conditions.
This crowdsourced system enables authorities to monitor the health of insured crops, validate crop sowing, and assess damage in the event of localized natural calamities such as hailstorms, floods, or droughts.
Key Objectives of CROPIC
- Real-time crop surveillance: Capture ground-level photos to report crop health status instantly.
- Damage assessment: Provide visual, time-tagged evidence for evaluating localized damage and disaster-related claims.
- Insurance validation: Support crop verification and assessment processes under PMFBY.
- Transparency and efficiency: Establish a reliable, tech-based monitoring system that builds trust among all stakeholders.
How CROPIC Supports PMFBY
CROPIC complements PMFBY’s broader goals by integrating with YESTECH’s yield estimation models, thereby improving accuracy in yield forecasts and risk assessments. The data collected through the app enables:
- Near real-time reporting of crop risks
- Validation of crops sown and insured under PMFBY
- Support for decision-making in claim settlement and policy formulation
A Step Toward Data-Driven Agriculture
By digitizing field observations and integrating them with satellite-based and remote sensing technologies, CROPIC is expected to enhance the effectiveness of crop insurance, reduce delays in claim processing, and improve responsiveness during crop-related disasters.
The app ultimately aims to empower both farmers and insurers through a transparent, evidence-backed system, helping bridge the gap between technology and agriculture.
Conclusion
CROPIC represents a major step forward in India’s agricultural technology landscape. By placing a real-time, transparent monitoring tool in the hands of farmers and field officers, the Government is ensuring better implementation of PMFBY while laying the foundation for smarter, data-driven agricultural policies.
