The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has expanded its emergency livelihood support in the Gaza Strip, announcing an increase in conditional cash assistance for an additional 1,000 farming households. The move comes as the region continues to face severe disruptions to food production due to conflict, supply shortages, and restrictions on agricultural inputs.
FAO officials stated that the expanded assistance aims to stabilize local farming activities, protect remaining agricultural assets, and help families restore income-generating capacity. Farmers receiving support will be able to invest in essential activities such as rehabilitating fields, purchasing limited inputs, repairing irrigation systems, and maintaining livestock where possible.
The organization emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Gaza’s agricultural sector remains extremely fragile. Many farmers have lost access to seeds, fertilizers, water pumps, animal feed, and spare parts—items that are critical to maintaining basic levels of crop and livestock production. FAO warned that without immediate and sustained support, food insecurity in the region could worsen further.
In its latest appeal, FAO urged authorities and international partners to liberalize the import of agricultural inputs to allow farmers to resume production at scale. The agency noted that current restrictions on fertilizers, tools, and greenhouse materials are significantly limiting the sector’s ability to recover. Ensuring predictable access to these inputs, it said, is essential to rebuilding local food systems and reducing reliance on costly food aid.
FAO also highlighted that revitalizing Gaza’s agricultural sector requires coordinated interventions, including access to land, water, electricity, and safe transportation routes. The organization continues to work with local institutions and humanitarian partners to monitor the evolving situation and deliver targeted support to the most vulnerable rural households.
With the new expansion of cash assistance, FAO reaffirmed its commitment to helping Gaza’s farmers rebuild their livelihoods and strengthen local food production amid ongoing challenges.
