In a major recognition of scientific excellence and leadership in climate-resilient agriculture, Dr. Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director and Vice-Chancellor of the ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR–IARI), New Delhi, has been selected for the Prof. M. S. Swaminathan Award 2024–25. The honour is among the most prestigious awards in Indian agricultural science and is conferred upon eminent scientists who have made significant contributions to food security, sustainable farming systems, and agricultural development.
A Landmark Honour in the Birth Centenary Year of Prof. M. S. Swaminathan
The Prof. M. S. Swaminathan Award, instituted in 2004–05, holds special importance this year as it is being presented during the birth centenary celebrations of the legendary agricultural scientist and “Father of India’s Green Revolution,” Prof. M. S. Swaminathan. His pioneering work laid the foundation for India’s food self-sufficiency, and the award reflects his vision of science-based, farmer-centric development.
The selection committee for the 2024–25 award was chaired by former ICAR Director General Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, with Dr. Vijay Gupta and Dr. Soumya Swaminathan serving as members. The committee unanimously selected Dr. Srinivasa Rao for his outstanding body of work and impactful contributions to climate-resilient farming.
Dr. Rao’s Leadership in Advancing Climate-Resilient Agriculture
Over the past several years, Dr. Srinivasa Rao has emerged as one of India’s foremost experts in natural resource management, conservation agriculture, and climate-smart farming systems. His research, policy guidance, and field-scale interventions have played a crucial role in helping farmers adapt to climate variability and build resilience against extreme weather events.
Under his leadership:
• More than 4 million hectares across various agro-climatic regions have adopted conservation agriculture practices.
• Climate adaptation planning models for districts and village clusters were created and widely implemented.
• Science-driven strategies for managing drought, heat stress, soil degradation, and water scarcity were translated into farmer-ready solutions.
His efforts have bridged the gap between scientific innovations and ground-level applications, ensuring that climate-smart technologies reach farmers who need them the most. Dr. Rao’s work has significantly contributed to enhancing productivity, improving input-use efficiency, and reducing climate-related risks for millions of farming households.
Award Components and Ceremony Details
The Prof. M. S. Swaminathan Award carries a gold medal, a citation, and a cash prize of ₹2 lakh. The 2024–25 award will be conferred on 18 April 2026 at the MCRHRD Institute in Hyderabad. Former Vice President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu will attend the ceremony as the Chief Guest, highlighting the national significance of the event.
A Recognition of India’s Progress in Climate-Smart Agriculture
The award to Dr. Srinivasa Rao comes at a critical time when climate change poses unprecedented threats to agriculture worldwide. India, with its diverse agro-ecologies and large population dependent on farming, requires advanced scientific strategies and robust policy interventions. Dr. Rao’s work aligns strongly with these priorities, offering scalable solutions for sustainable food production systems.
This recognition underscores the broader transformations underway within India’s agricultural research ecosystem. Institutions like ICAR–IARI are increasingly focusing on climate-resilient varieties, precision farming, natural resource management, and digital agriculture, all of which contribute to long-term food and nutritional security.
A Source of Inspiration for the Scientific Community
Dr. Rao’s selection for the Swaminathan Award is not only a tribute to his personal achievements but also an inspiration for the entire agricultural research fraternity. It highlights the growing importance of interdisciplinary research, science-led policy design, and innovations that directly benefit farmers.
His work reinforces the message that sustainable agriculture, technological progress, and climate adaptation are essential pillars for India’s future food systems.
With this prestigious honour, Dr. Ch. Srinivasa Rao has further strengthened his role as a national leader in climate-resilient agriculture, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey toward a more sustainable and secure agricultural future.
