IIVR Outreach Programme Engages 44,000 Farmers Across Six Districts in Uttar Pradesh

In a major initiative to enhance vegetable production and farm income, the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), has successfully connected with over 44,000 farmers across six districts of Uttar Pradesh. The outreach programme, executed over several months, aimed to transfer scientific vegetable cultivation practices directly to the grassroots level.

The campaign covered the districts of Varanasi, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, and Bhadohi, focusing on improving awareness about improved vegetable varieties, sustainable farming techniques, and nutrition-oriented practices. The programme was a blend of on-ground training sessions, demonstrations, and mobile-based advisories, offering farmers practical, research-backed solutions.

Empowering Farmers Through Technology and Training

At the heart of the outreach was the introduction of high-yielding, pest- and disease-resistant vegetable varieties developed by IIVR. These included improved hybrids and open-pollinated varieties of tomato, brinjal, chilli, okra, bitter gourd, and bottle gourd. Demonstration plots were established across 150 villages, giving farmers a chance to observe real-time growth performance and understand modern cultivation methods.

Farmers received hands-on training in nursery management, drip irrigation, integrated nutrient and pest management, and best practices in crop rotation and intercropping. The initiative also emphasized the role of vegetables in combating malnutrition, encouraging households to adopt nutri-gardens for self-consumption.

Women farmers and youth were special focus groups. The institute collaborated with self-help groups (SHGs) and rural youth clubs to promote vegetable-based micro-enterprises such as pickle making, dehydration, and seedling production, generating additional income opportunities.

Leveraging ICT for Real-Time Support

To expand its reach, IIVR utilized Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools such as SMS alerts, WhatsApp groups, voice calls, and community radio. Farmers received localized and timely advisories on weather forecasts, pest outbreaks, and crop care. Educational videos in Bhojpuri and Hindi were shared widely to ensure understanding, even among semi-literate farmers.

This combination of digital tools and physical demonstrations helped bridge the information gap and ensured that scientific knowledge was delivered in a farmer-friendly manner. According to many beneficiaries, yields increased by 15–20% in the same season after implementing IIVR-recommended practices.

Multi-Institutional Collaboration

The success of the outreach was made possible through joint efforts with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), local Panchayati Raj Institutions, the Department of Agriculture, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and various NGOs. Trained field coordinators were deployed in villages to provide continued support to farmers and monitor outcomes.

Dr. T.K. Behera, Director of IIVR, stated, “This outreach reflects our commitment to connecting laboratory innovations with the needs of farmers. By working closely with communities, we are helping build a resilient and nutrition-sensitive farming system in eastern Uttar Pradesh.”

Future Expansion

Buoyed by the positive impact, IIVR plans to expand the initiative to cover more districts and include advanced technologies such as protected cultivation, precision farming, and direct market linkages in the next phase. The goal is to enable small and marginal farmers to not only grow more but earn more, contributing to overall rural development and food security.
