Relentless Rain Disrupts Grape Pruning Cycle in Pune, Posing Threats to Vineyards

Unseasonal and prolonged rainfall across Pune has severely disrupted the ongoing grape pruning cycle, leaving vineyard owners worried about delays, disease risks, and potential yield losses. The unexpected showers have upset the crucial schedule of pruning, a key stage that determines the quality and quantity of the upcoming grape harvest.

Farmers in major grape-growing regions such as Baramati, Indapur, and Daund report that continuous rain has made it difficult to carry out pruning activities. Excessive moisture in the soil and atmosphere has increased the risk of fungal infections such as downy mildew and anthracnose, which can significantly damage vines and reduce fruit quality.

According to agricultural experts, this period is critical for grape cultivation. “If pruning is delayed, it affects the flowering and fruiting stages, which can ultimately lead to lower yields and poor berry size,” said a viticulture specialist from the Maharashtra State Grape Growers’ Association.

Vineyard owners are also facing challenges in applying fertilizers and fungicides, as rainwater washes away chemical sprays and creates unfavorable field conditions for farm work. Many farmers are being forced to wait for clear weather to resume pruning, fearing that hasty action could worsen plant health.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more scattered rainfall over the next few days, raising further concerns among growers. Experts are advising farmers to maintain field hygiene, ensure proper drainage, and use protective fungicide sprays once the rain subsides to prevent disease outbreaks.

Pune’s grape sector is a key contributor to both domestic markets and exports, especially table grapes destined for Europe and the Middle East. Any significant disruption in the current pruning cycle could affect the next harvest season’s supply and export quality.

As growers look to the skies, they hope for a timely return of dry conditions  essential for getting their vines back on schedule and safeguarding the hard-earned reputation of Maharashtra’s grape industry.
