Peru Shifts Blueberry Exports to Asian MarketsPeru, the world’s leading exporter of blueberries, is redirecting a larger share of its exports to Asian markets amid slowing demand in the United States and Europe. Industry officials said the strategic shift is aimed at tapping into the rapidly growing consumer base in countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, and India, where demand for fresh fruits is surging.
According to the Peruvian Blueberry Producers Association, shipments to Asia are expected to grow by over 40% this season, offsetting weaker orders from traditional markets. Exporters highlighted that rising health awareness and a preference for antioxidant-rich foods have boosted blueberry consumption across Asia.
China remains the top destination within Asia, followed by Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan. Industry players are also exploring opportunities in Southeast Asian nations, where middle-class consumers are increasingly adopting premium fruit products.
Peru has invested heavily in expanding blueberry production over the past decade, developing new varieties and improving cold-chain logistics to ensure longer shelf life during long-distance shipments. With global trade dynamics shifting, exporters believe that diversifying into Asia will help secure stable growth and reduce dependence on Western markets.
Analysts suggest that if the trend continues, Asia could surpass Europe as Peru’s second-largest blueberry market within the next few years, after the United States.
