Jiuyi Agriculture Secures Registration for New Pyroxasulfone–Atrazine Herbicide Formulation

Anhui Jiuyi Agriculture Co., Ltd. has received approval for a new pyroxasulfone-based herbicide formulation in China, further expanding its product portfolio in the selective herbicide segment. According to information released by the China Pesticide Information Network, the company has been granted registration for a pyroxasulfone + atrazine 27.5% suspension concentrate (SC), intended for the control of annual weeds.

Pyroxasulfone is a novel isoxazole herbicide known for its ability to inhibit very-long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) elongase, a key enzyme involved in plant cell growth. The active ingredient is absorbed by emerging shoots and roots, where it disrupts the development of the apical meristem and coleoptile after weed germination. Atrazine, a widely used selective systemic herbicide, works by inhibiting photosynthesis in susceptible weeds. When combined, the two active ingredients provide complementary modes of action.

The newly registered formulation is designed for post-sowing, pre-emergence soil application and is primarily targeted for use in maize fields. The mixture enables broad-spectrum control of common annual weeds and is expected to support resistance management by integrating multiple herbicidal mechanisms.

Jiuyi Agriculture is currently among the leading registrants of pyroxasulfone products in China. In addition to the newly approved formulation, the company obtained registration for pyroxasulfone + atrazine 98% technical concentrate (TC) in September 2024. Since the beginning of 2025, Jiuyi Agriculture has secured three additional single-agent registrations, including pyroxasulfone 40% SC and pyroxasulfone 85% WG for domestic use. The company has also received approval for an export-only pyroxasulfone 85% WG formulation designated for the Australian market.

Industry data indicate that pyroxasulfone mixture registrations have entered a phase of diversification since 2025. To date, nine pyroxasulfone-based mixtures have been approved in China. Alongside Jiuyi Agriculture, registrants include multinational and domestic companies such as BASF, Kosai Agrochem, Qingdao Hansen, Anhui Zhongbang, and KingAgroot.

Approved mixtures combine pyroxasulfone with active ingredients such as isoproturon, atrazine, metribuzin, cypyrafluone, pendimethalin, diflufenican, and broclozone. Among these, three different pyroxasulfone + isoproturon combinations have been registered at varying concentration levels.

The continued expansion of pyroxasulfone formulations reflects growing demand for effective pre-emergence weed control solutions and highlights increasing innovation within China’s herbicide market.
