Tamil Nadu Boosts Paddy Storage Capacity Ahead of Kuruvai and Samba Seasons

Tamil Nadu has significantly expanded its paddy storage capacity, adding 3 lakh metric tonnes and bringing the total capacity to over 7 lakh metric tonnes. The move is aimed at supporting the state’s procurement operations during the crucial Kuruvai and Samba cropping seasons and ensuring that farmers receive timely support for their produce.

The state government has highlighted that the expanded storage infrastructure will help manage the large volumes of paddy harvested during these peak seasons. Enhanced storage capacity not only prevents post-harvest losses but also ensures that procurement operations run smoothly, providing a reliable market for farmers and stabilizing rice supplies in the state.

Officials noted that the upgraded facilities are equipped with modern storage technology to maintain the quality and longevity of paddy. Proper ventilation, moisture control, and systematic stacking are being implemented to preserve grain quality, which is essential for meeting both domestic consumption needs and procurement targets.

The increase in storage capacity is part of Tamil Nadu’s broader strategy to strengthen its agricultural support system. By ensuring that sufficient storage is available, the government can facilitate timely procurement, prevent price fluctuations in the market, and provide farmers with financial stability. This initiative also aligns with efforts to modernize the state’s agricultural infrastructure and promote efficient post-harvest management.

Farmers have welcomed the development, noting that expanded storage capacity will reduce uncertainties related to market access and help secure fair prices for their crops. The assurance of adequate storage and smooth procurement processes encourages better planning and higher production during the Kuruvai and Samba seasons.

The government has also emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and monitoring of storage facilities to ensure long-term effectiveness. Along with storage expansion, efforts are being made to improve transportation, handling, and distribution systems to further enhance the efficiency of the procurement ecosystem.

With these measures, Tamil Nadu aims to support its rice farmers, strengthen food security, and promote sustainable agricultural growth. The expanded storage capacity represents a proactive step in safeguarding farmers’ interests and ensuring the smooth flow of paddy from fields to procurement centers during the critical harvesting periods.
