Boparai Kalan village. The event was organized under the All India Coordinated Research Project on Women in Agriculture (AICRP-WIA) by Dr Shivani Rana, Scientist, Department of Resource Management and Consumer Science, PAU.
The celebration witnessed active participation from 35 rural women who gathered to learn about eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. The key objective of the event was to spread awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and to encourage the use of biodegradable and recyclable materials like paper and cloth for everyday use. A special paper bag-making competition was held, where the participants showcased their creativity and commitment to environmental protection.
Dr Shivani Rana delivered a motivational lecture during the program, highlighting the pressing need to reduce plastic usage in daily life. She explained the multiple benefits of paper bags, emphasizing that unlike plastic, paper is biodegradable, recyclable, and safe for the environment. To make the session more practical and hands-on, Dr Rana also demonstrated how to make both paper and cloth bags at home, offering simple, low-cost solutions for rural households to adopt sustainable practices.
Participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the event. Winners of the paper bag competition Sukhwinder Kaur, Prakash Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, and Sukhjot Kaur were appreciated for their innovative designs and dedication to the cause. Their work reflected not only creativity but also a deep understanding of environmental responsibility.
The program successfully combined awareness, education, and active community participation. It particularly highlighted the significant role women can play in leading sustainability efforts at the grassroots level. The event was also supported by Dr Shikha, Young Professional-II, who assisted in its smooth organization.
Through such initiatives, PAU continues to strengthen its commitment to promoting eco-conscious living, especially in rural areas, and empowering women to become agents of positive environmental change.
