Australia Launches National Food Council to Strengthen Domestic Food Security

Australia has taken a major step toward fortifying its food security framework with the establishment of a new National Food Council. The Albanese government has appointed a panel of 11 leading experts from agriculture, nutrition, economics, supply chain management and climate science to guide the nation’s long-term food security strategy. This marks one of the most comprehensive efforts yet to build resilience across Australia’s domestic food systems.

According to government officials, the newly formed council will play a central advisory role in identifying risks, forecasting future challenges and recommending policy actions to safeguard the country’s food supply. The primary focus will be on strengthening domestic supply chains, especially in the context of climate pressures, global trade disruptions and fluctuating commodity markets that have tested food systems worldwide.

The council’s responsibilities will include assessing vulnerabilities in production, distribution and storage networks, and proposing ways to improve local capacity and adaptability. It will also work closely with industry bodies, farmers, state governments and community organisations to ensure that strategies are practical and inclusive. By involving a diverse group of experts, the government aims to integrate scientific research, ground-level experience and economic insights into a unified national approach.

Officials emphasised that Australia’s food system has remained relatively stable, but emerging threats such as extreme weather events, geopolitical tensions and rising input costs highlight the need for proactive planning. The creation of the National Food Council is therefore seen as a timely move to ensure Australians continue to have access to affordable, safe and nutritious food in the years ahead.

The Albanese government has stated that its goal is not only to protect domestic supply but also to strengthen the competitiveness of Australian agriculture in global markets. By focusing on sustainability, innovation and stronger local networks, the council is expected to help shape policies that support farmers while improving national resilience.

With the establishment of the National Food Council, Australia signals its commitment to future-focused food security planning. The expert panel’s recommendations are expected to guide major policy decisions and ensure that the country is better prepared for the complex challenges facing global and domestic food systems.
