Finance Minister Inaugurates Pulse Processing Unit in Karnataka

Karnataka took a significant step toward strengthening its agricultural value chain as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated a Farmers’ Training and Common Facility Centre in Raichur. The facility is designed to enhance pulse processing, packaging, and marketing, aiming to empower farmers and increase their incomes.

The centre provides farmers with access to modern processing equipment, training programs, and technical support, enabling them to produce high-quality pulses that meet market standards. By reducing dependence on intermediaries, the initiative is expected to directly benefit farmers by improving profitability and efficiency.

Speaking at the inauguration, Sitharaman emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening agricultural value chains and promoting initiatives that enhance farmer welfare. She highlighted that such centres not only support income generation but also contribute to job creation, skill development, and rural economic growth.

Local officials noted that the facility will help standardize pulse processing and packaging, ensuring better shelf life, hygiene, and market appeal. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernize agriculture in India, promote value addition, and support farmers in gaining a larger share of the profits from their produce.

Experts say that with increasing demand for pulses both domestically and internationally, such training and processing centres are vital for boosting the competitiveness of Indian agriculture. By equipping farmers with modern tools and knowledge, the initiative strengthens the entire pulse value chain, from farm production to retail.

The Raichur centre is part of a larger strategy to empower farmers, enhance rural livelihoods, and improve the overall efficiency of agricultural markets. With this facility operational, Karnataka is expected to see significant growth in pulse production quality and farmer incomes, setting an example for other states to follow.
