Belgium Confers High Honor on Global Agricultural Scientist Bram Govaerts

Bram Govaerts, the Director-General of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), has been awarded the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Crown by the Kingdom of Belgium. The national honor recognizes his outstanding contributions to sustainable agriculture, scientific innovation, and global food security.

Govaerts, a leading figure in international agricultural research, has played a pivotal role in promoting climate-smart farming practices, improving smallholder livelihoods, and advancing efforts to build resilient food systems worldwide. Under his leadership, CIMMYT has strengthened its work in crop improvement, regenerative agriculture, and cutting-edge technologies that support farmers facing climate stress.

The Order of the Crown is one of Belgium’s highest civilian honors. It is awarded to individuals who demonstrate exceptional service in their field, whether in science, culture, public life, or humanitarian work. The recognition underscores Govaerts’ long-standing commitment to advancing sustainable farming solutions, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate change.

In response to the honor, Govaerts emphasized the importance of collaborative research and global partnerships in meeting future food challenges. He noted that strengthening science-based innovations is essential for ensuring food security for a rapidly growing population.

The award highlights the increasing global focus on sustainable agriculture and the critical role that scientific leadership plays in shaping resilient food systems for the future.
