African Swine Fever Triggers National Alert in South Korea

South Korea has issued a “serious” national alert following the detection of African swine fever (ASF) at a pig farm in Dangjin, the country’s largest pig-breeding region. Authorities confirmed the outbreak after testing and have moved quickly to contain the disease, which is highly contagious among pigs though harmless to humans.

In response, the government ordered emergency quarantine measures, including movement restrictions on nearby farms and stepped-up disinfection procedures. Officials say these actions are critical to preventing the virus from spreading to other major livestock areas.

The latest outbreak has raised concerns within the country’s pork industry, as ASF can lead to significant economic losses due to mandatory culling and trade disruptions. South Korea continues to monitor the situation closely as containment efforts proceed.
