Ministry of Rural Development Leads Cleanliness Drives under ‘Swachhata Hi Seva – 2025’

The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) actively participated in the nationwide ‘Swachhata Hi Seva – 2025’ campaign, held from 17th September to 2nd October 2025, in collaboration with the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The campaign, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of cleanliness and civic responsibility, engaged officers, staff, and community members across multiple initiatives.

The Ministry’s activities began with a Pledge Taking Ceremony on 22nd September at Kartavya Bhawan-3, New Delhi, where participants committed to devote 100 hours annually to voluntary cleanliness efforts and to promote sanitation awareness in both rural and urban areas.

On 25th September, a one-day mass cleanliness drive (Shramdaan) was conducted at the park opposite Gate No. 1, Kartavya Bhawan-3, led by the Secretary, Rural Development. The drive brought together officers, staff, and local citizens in a demonstration of community-led action ahead of Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2nd October.

In addition, the Ministry organised a drawing competition, ‘Swachhotsav’, on 26th September at Unnati Conference Hall, Krishi Bhawan. Children of Ministry staff, employees, and stakeholders participated, using creative expression to promote awareness on hygiene and sanitation.

The Ministry also issued advisories to States and Union Territories (except Delhi and Chandigarh) to organize Swachhata Hi Seva activities at Amrit Sarovar sites, mobilizing MGNREGA functionaries, Self-Help Groups, students, youth, freedom fighters, and local communities. Activities included Swachhata pledges, voluntary Shramdaan, ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ initiative, and recognition ceremonies for Safai Mitras and volunteers.

Complementing these efforts, a nationwide plantation drive was held, with States and UTs planting five lakh seedlings of regionally suitable native species, geo-tagged and mapped on the MeriLIFE portal. The drive saw enthusiastic participation from schools, eco-clubs, self-help groups, and civil society organizations, reinforcing environmental sustainability alongside cleanliness initiatives.

Through these activities, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the Swachh Bharat Mission and Gandhi’s vision of a clean and progressive India. By combining pledges, mass participation, and creative engagement, MoRD continues to promote responsible citizenship, community participation, and a culture of cleanliness across the nation.
